5 questions to ask when adopting a dog
Adopting a dog is a life-changing decision that brings boundless joy and companionship.
Like any relationship, taking time to ensure a good match is key!
When adopting a dog, answer these questions:
1. How busy is your lifestyle?
Are you an outdoor adventurer? Do you work from home? Live alone or have several family members in the home? Evaluate your work schedule, activity level, and living situation, both now and even what you may think the next 10 years may be. Choosing a dog who matches your energy level is a great way to find a successful match.
2. Have you met your potential dog?
Dogs have diverse personalities. Some are outgoing and social, while others are 100% happy to be on the couch curled up next to you. Spending some time with the dog at a meet and greet, even taking them for a walk or fostering to adopt are great ways to get to know the pup.
3. Are you ready for the puppy stage?
Puppies are so darn adorable, but they require a lot of time and training. (And don’t forget those puppy chewing teeth!) Adult dogs often come with established behaviors, often leash and potty trained already, sleep through the night, and might require less constant attention. Consider what age range suits you and your ability to provide care and training.
4. Are you a world-class dog trainer or are you OK if your dog can sit, stay, play?
Our dogs in foster homes get great beginner skills in basic commands. Choose a dog (size, age, personality) that aligns with your commitment and dedication to training!
5. Do you have other pets?
Introduce a potential new dog to your existing furry friends to ensure a smooth transition.
Ask a foster!
Our shelter staff, fosters, and volunteers spend tons of time with our dogs. A great insight into the personality, behavior, and vibe of a dog is to talk with our dedicated fosters. And 11 times out of 10, they have hundreds of photos and videos they’d love to share with you.
